Calc examples

Name the sheet and the range you mean ("column C on Sheet2", "the selected cells"). Calc has the largest toolset, so a precise scope helps the assistant pick the right tool.

Each example below covers one tool category. Document edits ask for your approval in ask-before mode; exports and scripts always ask. The full tool list is on Calc capabilities, and the skills are described under Shipped skills.

Analysis

You ask: "Give me a summary of this sales data: totals, spread and the biggest categories."

What the assistant does:

  • Calls get_spreadsheet_info to see the sheets and their used ranges.
  • Calls read_spreadsheet on the data range.
  • Keeps the raw data untouched and builds a separate analysis sheet: descriptive statistics with error-safe formulas, a frequency distribution, and a cross-tab, with a chart where it helps.
  • Explains the result in a few sentences.

You check: the formulas in the new sheet against a couple of figures you know.

Writing the analysis sheet is an edit and asks for approval in ask-before mode.

Uses the skill: Data Analysis Workbook

Editing

You ask: "Remove duplicate customers by email in column B, then sort the list by signup date, newest first."

What the assistant does:

  • Reads the range with read_spreadsheet to confirm which columns hold the email and the date.
  • Calls remove_duplicates keyed on the email column.
  • Calls sort_range on the signup date column, descending.
  • Can use write_cells, find_replace_cells, text_to_columns, transpose_range or auto_filter for related clean-up.

You check: the row count before and after. remove_duplicates is a high-risk tool, so check the result before saving.

Edits ask for approval in ask-before mode. Editing has no dedicated skill, so the assistant follows your wording.

Formatting

You ask: "Make the header row bold with a dark blue background, show amounts as currency, and highlight any overdue amount in red."

What the assistant does:

  • Calls format_cells for the bold header, background colour and number format.
  • Calls conditional_format with a rule for the overdue values.
  • Calls freeze_panes so the header stays visible, and set_column_width if columns are too narrow.

You check: the rule's threshold and that the colours stay readable when printed.

Edits ask for approval in ask-before mode. Formatting has no dedicated skill in this example.

Structure

You ask: "Add a Summary sheet, name the data range SalesData, and protect the formulas sheet."

What the assistant does:

  • Calls add_sheet for the new sheet.
  • Calls create_named_range so formulas can use SalesData instead of cell addresses.
  • Calls protect_sheet on the sheet you named, with a password only if you ask for one.
  • Can also rename_sheet, insert_rows, delete_columns and group_rows_columns.

You check: that you know the password if one was set. Deleting a sheet or copying a sheet is high-risk and the assistant will ask first.

Edits ask for approval in ask-before mode.

Advanced

You ask: "Build a KPI dashboard from the Data sheet: revenue, orders and average order value, with a monthly trend."

What the assistant does:

  • Keeps data, calculations and the dashboard on separate sheets, with the dashboard reading only from the calculations sheet.
  • Uses build_dashboard when a spreadsheet plan exists, otherwise builds step by step with write_cells, create_chart and conditional_format.
  • Can use create_pivot_table for a breakdown by region or month.
  • Wraps formulas in error handling so empty periods do not show errors.

You check: every KPI against a number you trust, and the period the dashboard filters on.

Edits ask for approval in ask-before mode; execute_script, when needed, always asks.

Uses the skill: KPI Dashboard

Media

You ask: "Put our logo in the top-right of the Summary sheet and draw an arrow pointing at the total."

What the assistant does:

  • Calls insert_image with the file path or URL you give.
  • Calls insert_shape to add the arrow.
  • Positions both on the active sheet. If you need a chart rather than a picture, it uses create_chart instead.

You check: that the objects sit over empty cells and do not hide data. Media tools have no dedicated skill.

Edits ask for approval in ask-before mode.

Annotation

You ask: "Add a note on B7 explaining that this figure is a manager estimate."

What the assistant does:

  • Calls insert_cell_comment on B7 with your text.
  • Can remove a comment with the same tool.

You check: that the comment is on the right cell. Annotation has no dedicated skill.

Edits ask for approval in ask-before mode.

Import

You ask: "Load the file customers.csv as a new sheet, then clean it: trim spaces, drop empty rows and standardise the country column."

What the assistant does:

  • Calls import_csv to bring the file in as a new sheet, so your existing data stays as it was.
  • Writes the cleaned version to a separate sheet rather than overwriting the import.
  • Uses execute_script for the cleaning steps the dedicated tools do not cover, such as trimming, de-duplicating and normalising text.

You check: the row counts of the imported and cleaned sheets, and any rows it dropped.

import_csv asks for approval in ask-before mode. execute_script always asks.

Uses the skill: Data Import and Transformation

Export

You ask: "Save a copy as Excel to my Desktop and set the print area to A1:H40."

What the assistant does:

  • Calls set_print_area for the range you gave.
  • Calls export_xlsx with the full path. The export writes a copy and does not change the open document.
  • Can use export_csv for a single sheet with a delimiter of your choice.
  • Reports the path it wrote to.

You check: the saved file opens and keeps your formulas and formats.

Exports always ask for approval.

Uses the skill: Export, PDF Generation and Print Setup
