Impress examples

Say how many slides you want, who the audience is, and what each slide should do. The assistant works slide by slide, so it can change one slide or the whole deck.

Each example below covers one tool category. Document edits ask for your approval in ask-before mode; exports and scripts always ask. The full tool list is on Impress capabilities, and the skills are described under Shipped skills.

Analysis

You ask: "What is on each slide? Which ones are text-heavy?"

What the assistant does:

  • Calls get_presentation_info for each slide's index, name, title, layout and shape count.
  • Calls read_slide on the slides that look crowded to read all their shapes and text.
  • Can use the shared screenshot_slide to look at how a slide renders.
  • Suggests which slides to split or shorten. These tools only read.

You check: the slide numbers in its answer, which count from the first slide.

Editing

You ask: "Shorten slides 3 to 7 to three bullets each and add speaker notes."

What the assistant does:

  • Calls read_slide for each of those slides.
  • Calls write_slide_text with the shortened title and body.
  • Calls set_speaker_notes with the detail that no longer fits on the slide.
  • Can use find_replace_slides to rename a term across the deck.

You check: that nothing important was cut and that the notes still read well when you present. Editing has no dedicated skill.

Edits ask for approval in ask-before mode.

Formatting

You ask: "Make the deck look consistent: one theme, slide numbers from slide 2, and a build animation on the KPI cards."

What the assistant does:

  • Calls get_presentation_info, then apply_theme once to set a single background and fonts for the deck.
  • Calls add_slide_numbering starting at slide 2 so the title slide stays clean.
  • Calls read_slide to find the card shapes, then apply_animation with a fade-in on the first click and the rest after the previous one.
  • Uses the same transition type across the deck rather than mixing them.

You check: the animation order by running the slideshow once.

Edits ask for approval in ask-before mode.

Uses the skill: Animation Choreography

Structure

You ask: "Add a Risks slide after slide 4, move the Summary slide to the end, and duplicate slide 2 as a starting point for the appendix."

What the assistant does:

  • Calls add_slide at position 5 and write_slide_text for its title.
  • Calls move_slide to send the Summary to the end.
  • Calls duplicate_slide on slide 2.
  • Can rename_slide for a clearer internal name; delete_slide is high-risk and is confirmed first.

You check: the final order in the slide panel. Structure has no dedicated skill.

Edits ask for approval in ask-before mode.

Media

You ask: "Put the quarterly revenue on slide 6 as a chart: Q1 2.1, Q2 2.4, Q3 2.8, Q4 3.2 million. Title it with the point of the chart."

What the assistant does:

  • Picks the chart type from the story: a bar chart for a comparison, a line for a trend over time.
  • Calls insert_chart_on_slide with a title that states the insight, not just "Chart", and keeps categories and series few enough to read.
  • Puts one chart on the slide, and the interpretation and source in the speaker notes with set_speaker_notes.
  • Can use insert_table_on_slide, insert_image_on_slide or layout_grid for a row of KPI cards.

You check: the values and the title wording.

Edits ask for approval in ask-before mode.

Uses the skill: Data Visualization on Slides

Bulk

You ask: "Turn this outline into a 10-slide investor pitch."

What the assistant does:

  • Follows the pitch narrative: hook, problem, solution, market, traction, model, team, ask.
  • Calls render_deck to build the whole deck from a structured plan in one call, including theme, per-slide backgrounds and speaker notes.
  • Uses apply_slide_ops afterwards for batches of small fixes, up to 25 per call.

You check: every number and claim. The assistant writes structure and wording, but the market and traction figures must come from you.

Edits ask for approval in ask-before mode.

Uses the skill: Startup / VC Pitch Deck

Advanced

You ask: "Create a roadmap slide with three phases across 2026 and milestone markers."

What the assistant does:

  • Draws the axis with insert_shape_on_slide as a line, then a coloured bar per phase.
  • Adds a marker circle and a date label per milestone with insert_shape_on_slide and insert_text_box_on_slide.
  • Adds a short summary slide before it using add_slide and write_slide_text.
  • Falls back to execute_script only when no dedicated tool covers a step. In Impress it is meant for cases the other tools cannot reach.

You check: that labels do not overlap and the phase dates are right.

Edits ask for approval in ask-before mode; execute_script always asks.

Uses the skill: Timeline / Roadmap Visualization

Export

You ask: "Export this deck as PowerPoint to my Desktop."

What the assistant does:

  • Calls export_pptx with the full file path you give.
  • The export writes a copy and does not change the open presentation.
  • Can export a PDF with the shared export_pdf if you ask for that instead.
  • Reports the path.

You check: open the exported file in PowerPoint and look at fonts, animations and transitions, which can differ between applications.

Exports always ask for approval. Export has no dedicated skill.
