Inline suggestions don't appear

What you see

You type in Writer, but no suggested text appears ahead of your cursor. There is no error message: inline suggestions fail silently, so the sidebar and the document look normal.

Cause

Inline suggestions run on your computer, on a model that ships with the app. Unlike chat in the sidebar, they do not go through the OfficeLabs cloud, so they need no sign-in. When a suggestion cannot be produced, Writer simply shows none. After a few failures in a row it pauses for about 30 seconds, then tries again as you keep typing. The usual reasons, most common first:

  • Inline suggestions are turned off. The Inline suggestions in Writer switch in the app's settings is off.
  • The local assistant service is not running. Suggestions are produced by the same background service the sidebar uses. If it stopped or never started, neither works.

What to do

  1. In the app's settings, check that Inline suggestions in Writer is on.
  2. Send a short message in the sidebar. If the sidebar never answers, follow Service not responding.
  3. Go back to your document and type a few words. Allow up to 30 seconds after fixing the cause for suggestions to resume.

When to contact support

Contact support if the sidebar works and the switch is on, but Writer still never shows a suggestion.

Use the contact page on the OfficeLabs website, and include the time it happened, the OfficeLabs version, and the newest agent-*.log file. See Collecting logs for support for where to find the files.
